Recently we asked Kelsey and John what finally brought them to CrossFit – here is what they said:
John: Health and fitness shapes who I am today as a human being. It started at an early age and continues to empower me down the path of life and happiness. Whether it is at the gym, at work or at home, I embrace all challenges that I encounter. CrossFit is a new obstacle in my life that I have embraced. It is an exercise regimen that is challenging and ever-changing.
I’ve always been fueled by competition and results. When my career as a collegiate athlete came to an end, I searched for a means to keep my competitive fire burning. I turned to running and lifting. After three knee surgeries, my doctor told me to search for alternate methods of cardiovascular exercise. Although the gym kept me relatively fit, I was still not satisfied. Relatively speaking, I was slipping deeper and deeper into my comfort zone.
I discovered CrossFit in 2009 while visiting my wife’s sister and brother-in-law in California. Although, it wasn’t until December 2011 that I finally joined CrossFit Station. The atmosphere at CrossFit Station is exactly what I’ve been looking for; a competitive environment that will push me out of my comfort zone. I look forward to developing not only as an individual, but as a team at CrossFit Station.
Kelsey: I grew up playing sports (none of which I was exceptionally good at) and have continued to enjoy an active lifestyle into adulthood whether it be my (less than successful) attempt at being a runner, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, or just walking my dog.
I have had a gym membership for as long as I can remember. I would go through phases of of dedication, but was often bored with the routine and had no accountability.
From the very first day I stepped foot into CrossFit Station I was hooked. I love the variety in the workouts, the competitive environment, the community, and the trainers. I know that if I don’t show up, it will not go unnoticed.
CrossFit has changed my life. I thought that I was working hard at the gym. I would go 4-5 times a week and do basically the same thing every day. I would get on the treadmill and run until I got bored—a mile or two at most =)—then grab a couple dumbbells and do some biceps curls, press, squats, etc. Once I got married, my husband and I started working out together. It was only then that I was called out (politely of course) by my husband for not pushing myself. He would laugh when I would pick up the 10lb dumbbells day after day and do the same routine (I had always been under the impression that I shouldn’t lift heavy weight or I would get too bulky). I would leave the gym without breaking much of a sweat.
I have a whole new appreciation for fitness. In only a few months I have seen amazing changes in my body and what it can do. I started the year with the goal that by year’s end I would be able to do ONE kipping pull-up without any assistance. I did my first unassisted kipping pull-up last week and it’s only February! I can’t wait to see where I am a year from now!
Not only do I see the results after only a couple of months but I wake up excited every morning. I love spending the morning with my husband (and my new crossfit family)! CrossFit is something that my husband and I can do together. A fellow CrossFitter joked the other day with John and I that “couples who CrossFit together, stay together” and I like to think there is truth in that statement! I can’t imagine my life without CrossFit and hope I never have to!
